Recycling 101

Drury Recycling

Drury University is an institution that is on the forefront of making recycling accessible to the masses. Drury has just formed a recycling coalition with City Utilities, OTC, the library on Central Street, and the Springfield Public School System. With these forces coming together, they are all making recycling in the Midtown area much more accessible and creating more recycling options. The coalition has created two more options to the Drury recycling effort, glass and cardboard. Drury now has paper, plastic, aluminum, glass and cardboard recycling bins. With this increase in Drury’s recycling capacity, Drury has found the need to hire a new student intern to help oversee the recycling project.

Drury is also a university that is taking part in Recycling Mania. This is a month long competition involving universities all across the nation to see who can recycle the most pounds of paper and plastic goods each week. Drury’s own Sarah Davis is in charge of calculating the numbers given, and determines the winners each week. This competition is lasting till the end of April. I encourage everyone to recycle as much as possible this month to help Drury try to win this competition!

Last month Drury was awarded a grant from the National Recycling Coalition’s Bin Grant Competition. This grant allows Drury to purchase more recycling bins to be placed all over campus. This will allow Drury to obtain 58 more bins, both for indoor and outdoor recycling use. This grant is also in part with the Coca-Cola Company and their recycling efforts all across college campuses. This increase of recycling capability will hopefully encourage the community to strive towards a more sustainable lifestyle.

The outdoor Drury Recycling Bins can be found behind the Hammons School of Architecture. There all your paper, plastic, aluminum, cardboard, and glass goods can be recycled. They are open Monday thru Friday 7am to 4pm; also don’t be afraid to recycle on your own!
